Welcome to Bukhara.

You are now standing before one of the most important monuments of the Poi Kalyan ensemble: the magnificent Kalyan Mosque.

If the Kalyan Minaret is the vertical symbol of this ensemble, rising dramatically into the Bukhara skyline, then the mosque is its great horizontal centre — a vast space designed to bring people together.

The word “Kalyan” means “great” or “large.” The mosque was Bukhara’s great congregational, or Friday, mosque.
