As you stand beside the Bolo-Hauz Mosque and look toward the water, you may notice a comparatively small structure rising beside it: the Bolo-Hauz Minaret.

It may not be the tallest minaret in Bukhara. It does not dominate the skyline in the way the famous Kalyan Minaret does. And yet, this modest tower has a fascinating story of its own.

The minaret was built in 1917 by Usto Shirin Muradov, one of the celebrated master craftsmen and architects of Bukhara. It was added more than two centuries after the original Bolo-Hauz Mosque, which dates back to 1712. This difference in age is one of the most interesting things about the complex: when you look at the mosque, the minaret, and the hauz together, you are actually looking at different chapters of Bukhara's history brought together in one place.

Before we look closely at the minaret itself, take a moment to notice where it stands.
