The broad space in front of the Ark Fortress is Bukhara’s historic Registan area. It should not be confused with Samarkand’s famous Registan Square, surrounded by three monumental madrasahs. The word “Registan” comes from Persian and means “sandy place,” and the name was used for central squares in many cities of Central Asia. Bukhara’s Registan was an important center of urban life in front of the Ark.

Imagine this area centuries ago. The open space you see today was once much busier. Markets, shops, caravanserais, madrasahs, workshops, and public buildings stood around the Registan. Bukhara was a major city on the Silk Road, so merchants arrived from many different regions. Historical descriptions mention trade in grain, textiles, weapons, headwear, fruit, paper, ink, and other goods.

The most important relationship here is between the Registan and the Ark. The Ark was the political center of the rulers, while the Registan was a stage for urban life outside the fortress. It was therefore not simply an empty square. It was a place where power and people, palace and market, government and everyday life came together.

Looking at the area today, it is difficult to imagine how many buildings once stood here. Many have disappeared over time. The Bolo-Hauz Mosque is one of the most important surviving monuments connected with the historic Registan. Standing opposite the Ark, it makes the old relationship between the ruler’s fortress and the public mosque especially clear.
